Yesterday I had my review at work. It’s a five minute thing. I go in my supervisor tells me what I doing right, what I can improve. Blah, Blah, Blah. Well, it’s more than obvious that the station is feeling the crunch with the two recent firings and some forced retirements. My supervisor told me yesterday that I will have to train on video and master control(they handle running all commercial breaks etc.) He basically told everyone else the same thing. Everyone must cross-train on everything. He said it’s obvious the station is cutting back and the “more you know the further you go”. Here’s the deal, I already direct, technical direct, do audio and graphics. So, if everyone is learning everythng, that still doesn’t help the situation. Do you see what I’m getting at? He makes it seem like if you learn everything you’ll have a job-BS. If everyone in the dept knows everyone elses job, when it comes time to make cuts who do you cut? There is no safety net, they just want to work you like crazy, for the least amount of cost to them. Who cares if you do none of the jobs well as long as you do the job. WTF!? I hate the idea of learning master control. Let me tell you it is the most boring jobs in tv. You don’t get a dinner break and you can barely leave your seat for 8 hrs. It is completely thank less but if you screw up it’s the end of the world. Also, we have a pretty much bare bones crew at 2nd shift. There is not enough people for me to be able to devote a full work day to training in either of the positions. So, I’m supposed to sit in on master control on my down time. Granted I have alot of down time but there are a lot of ins and outs of mc it’s not something you want to try and learn for an hour or two here and there.
Yes, I have a job in this crappy ecomony. That is a blessing. However, I’m not so “thankful to just have a job” that I can’t recognize BS when it’s put on a platter in front of me.
